Please guide me on ‘Jerk spots’ in Jamaica?

QUESTION: Dear Thea?
Planning locations for my next film, “The Great Jamaican Jerk Tour” in May. Recommend any spots?

Basco Roskind

RESPONSE: Dear Brasco,
O My!
You must first realise that this is a very popular activity islandwide as more Jamaicans take to the streets to earn a living from the ‘jerk pan’. These ‘pan’ men, who are widely accepted as great contributors to Jamaica’s culture, jerk a variety of meat although the more popular are fish, chicken and pork. I’ve known of spots jerking mutton, beef and even vegetable stalks. Jerk sausage is now an increasing favourite. Chicken is particularly jerked in at least three ways.
To do a ‘jerk’ tour you must therefore consider the formal jerk establishments, the ‘jerk pan’ man of the streets, both night and day, and the cook shops. Don’t forget the friendly neighbours, fast food establishments and restaurants who very willing to jerk for you. Restaurants such as Island Grill offers a delicious jerk fish or pork on their menu.
Most parish borders either have a jerk establishment, or a line of jerk pan vendors. The list of ‘jerk spots’ is always growing, so do extensive research with a contact person before you come. The list of the more popular spots are include:
Boston (Portland)
Blueberry Hill (Portland)
Montego Bay (St James)
border of St Elizabeth and St James
Atop Long Lane Road (Kingston and Saint Andrew)
Along Red Hills Road (Kingston and Saint Andrew)
Corner of White Hall Avenue and Mannings Hill Road (Kingston and Saint Andrew)
Chelsea Jerk Centre (New Kingston, Saint Andrew)
across from the Pegasus Hotel (Knutsford Boulevard, Saint Andrew)
Faith’s Pen (Saint Ann in Moneague region)
Runaway Bay (in Saint Ann, almost across from Green Grotto caves)
Spur tree Hill (Saint Elizabeth)

EDITOR’s NOTE:
Remember there are other popular spots, and the list is ever-growing. So please do make contact with someone with experience in touring, or make friends along the way for a better trip.
YOU MAY want to check if running water is available before sampling/or making purchase as well as ensure that the heads of the vendor are properly covered.
Enjoy!!
